Strategy or tactical RPGs are a pretty niche subgenre, all things considered. Sure, there are the heavy-hitters like Fire Emblem that have a pretty broad playerbase, but open-world RPGs these are not. These games appeal to a very particular kind of gamer who enjoys the progression of an RPG, and maybe even the branching narrative aspects, but needs combat to feel more like a brainteaser and less like a slugfest.

This list is for those gamers, or for those who are curious about the strategy RPG genre and are looking to dip their toes in. These next games are not well-known, and have, in fact, been largely forgotten, even though they all reviewed very well. That said, there's no better time to jump into them, as they all offer exciting twists on the strategy RPG format and can provide you with at least a solid 30 hours of exciting tactical gameplay. If that sounds like your cup of tea, read on.
Several years before Space Marines became truly popular again with Space Marine 2, Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector brought Earth's legions to the tactical space with a bang. It's a game that rewards strategic success through its Momentum system, empowering your units after they notch a kill or two, encouraging a more aggressive approach to wiping out the Tyrannids.
Instead of receiving general combat upgrades, Battlesector gives you a skill tree to level up your commanders, which is where the RPG elements come into play. From there, you can buff some of your preferred units, but you won't be able to buff all of them, so it's crucial to design your squadron around a specific tactical playstyle. Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector didn't receive the same level of attention as some of the more recent 40k games, despite solid critical reception, but it's definitely worth a look, especially if you're already a fan of the IP.
If you like your pirate games with a bit more fantasy in the mix, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew is the perfect title to check out. The newest (and sadly final) game from legendary tactics studio Mimimi Games is a brilliant stealth tactics RPG where your crew of eight distinct undead pirates charts a course across the seas, completing heists and daring escapes as you go.
Each crew member is memorable and instantly likable, from the Cannon Master, who can launch teammates out of a cannon, to the Navigator, who can teleport short distances. They each have upgrade paths to follow and unique personal quests to pursue throughout your journey. Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew is one of the most accessible tactics games ever made, and easily the most beginner-friendly title on this list, but that doesn't make it easy. It's just designed to perfection, giving you all the information you need to plan a mission, and an array of gameplay tools that make you feel like a genius when you pull it off.
You may have forgotten about Phantom Brigade because its original release was pretty, well, forgettable. It had a cool idea and some interesting execution, but it was very bare-bones. The game's 2.0 update, released in late 2025, was essentially a total revamp, and it has turned this into one of the best mech tactics games around.
