The Witcher 3 is back with The Witcher 3: Remastered, a free update to the beloved 2015 RPG ahead of its Songs of the Past expansion in 2027. The excitement surrounding this Witcher 3 revival is palpable, as gamers generally aren't shy about their love for this best-selling high-fantasy adventure.
At the risk of sounding like a contrarian, I'd like to point out that The Witcher 3's status as "greatest RPG ever" is far from uncontested. It's an amazing game, especially after its myriad updates across the years, but it's also janky at times, with slippery movement and combat that isn't to everyone's liking. It's also an inherently less open-ended RPG, only offering one real "build" and role-playing path.
This is to say that, while The Witcher 3 is an undeniable masterpiece, there are other RPGs that are as amazing, if not better, than CD Projekt Red's opus.
The Witcher 3 stems from Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher stories, but Elden Ring stands on its own two feet as a wickedly original piece of fantasy world-building. As if to further establish the game as a seminal, essential piece of gaming history, FromSoftware even roped in best-selling Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin for Elden Ring, having him devise its labyrinthine, bizarre lore.

It often surprises me how many gamers are already taking Elden Ring for granted. You can find all manner of retrospective videos on YouTube and hot takes on social media about how Elden Ring isn't as good as FromSoftware's other works, or how it's just not good, period. While everyone's entitled to their opinion, let's be real: Elden Ring is a one-of-a-kind open-world experience, and more than deserving of the Greatest of All Time label.
It's a real shame that Cyberpunk 2077 got off to the start that it did, because it's a truly terrific game. Now that it's been raised to the level that CD Projekt Red promised pre-2020, it's clear that Cyberpunk 2077 meets a sky-high standard for urban world design, ray-tracing technology, and RPG storytelling. In my opinion, it surpasses The Witcher 3 in these respects and others.
Speaking anecdotally, it seems like Cyberpunk 2077 is also more accessible than The Witcher 3. I've seen plenty of non-RPG fans, and even straight-up non-gamers, fall in love with Cyberpunk in a way that they don't with other games, including The Witcher 3.
