Everything Coming to HBO Max in September

Everything Coming to HBO Max in September

While the Paramount and Warner Bros. deal continues to sit in legal limbo, HBO Max is chugging along with another strong lineup of new additions in September. The streaming service is kicking off the fall season with a ridiculous spread of horror movies, including one of this year’s biggest box office hits, Backrooms. On the series side, Lanterns continues to be the biggest HBO Original in the Sunday night slot.

There’s some particular highlights we’d recommend tuning into next month, but you can also jump ahead to everything coming to HBO Max in September by day.

DC Studios’ Lanterns will continue to air and stream new episodes in HBO’s primetime slot on Sunday nights. The series is a new take on the Green Lantern lore, starring Kyle Chandler as the veteran Hal Gordon and Aaron Pierre as the new recruit John Stewart. We’ve been pretty impressed with the series so far, calling the premiere “a critical return to form for the DCU.”

Before Kane Parsons (yes, Backrooms is also on this list), we had the Philippou brothers. These content creators marked their directorial debut with Talk to Me, a harrowing horror movie we gave a particularly strong 9/10 and called “engrossing, inventive, and, at times, unsettling.”

While Talk to Me was first released back in 2019, it hasn’t been streaming anywhere for quite some time, making the return to HBO Max particularly significant.

HBO Max won’t be getting all of the Final Destination movies, but they’ll be picking up some classics at the start of the month. If you enjoyed the most recent slasher instalment, Bloodlines (which is already streaming on the service), why not go back to check out the freak accidents that started it all?

One of two HBO Original documentary series premiering in September, Jay-Z in 8 follows the notorious rapper and entrepreneur in Paris as he speaks with Rick Rubin about his music and legacy. The series will run for eight episodes total, with the first two dropping on September 18.

Probably the biggest movie premiere of the month, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms is making its way exclusively to HBO Max after dominating the box office earlier this year. The liminal horror movie is based on a creepypasta Parsons himself had adapted into a long-term video project on YouTube. IGN gave the movie a solid 8/10, describing it as a “truly terrifying cinematic rabbit hole.”
