The Pokemon TCG will make history next week when it releases its 30th Celebration expansion. It will be the first set in Pokemon’s history to be released everywhere at the same time. If you plan on picking something up when the set arrives, the promo card you’ll get for free, provided you spend enough, has now been revealed.
Mewtwo is the star of the set’s promo card, and the only way to get it will be by spending more than the qualifying amount in participating stores. As is the case with the other cards in the 30th Celebration expansion, Mewtwo’s promo has an anniversary Pikachu logo stamped on it, along with a “What’s Your Favorite?” stamp.
Pokemon’s 30th birthday theme has been to question fans on what their favorite Pokemon is of the 1,025 available. 1,028 if you include Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua.
To qualify for a free Mewtwo card, you will need to spend $15 or more on Pokemon TCG products at participating retailers. Those products don’t necessarily need to be from the 30th Celebration expansion. Handy, as those items will almost certainly sell out pretty fast. The promo also doesn’t begin until October 2, 2026, even though the new set will be released on September 16.
With a Pokemon promo card inevitably comes chaos. No matter how many The Pokemon Company prints, this Mewtwo will still be a limited edition card. That means the more nefarious Pokemon fans, along with people who aren’t really fans at all, are going to try and get their hands on as many as possible so they can then sell them to real fans who missed out for a ridiculous price.
It’s difficult to stop that, especially with individual cards like this. One way Pokemon appears to be trying to tip the scales back in the favor of real fans for this particular promo is by making the card available in more places than usual, especially in the US. Seven major chains will carry the card in the US, all of which are listed below, which suggests there are going to be a lot of these Mewtwo promos to go around.
The card will also be available through EB Games in Canada and Oceania, as well as JB Hi-Fi, Toymate, Mr Toys, and Big W in the latter.
Almost every card from the 30th Celebration expansion has now been revealed, including new Illustration Rares and the Mew and Mewtwo Futuristic Rares, a new rarity created for this particular set. There’s still no sign of the RGB Mew that Pokemon fans have been arguing over for months, though. There have been claims that the Mew is an incredibly rare card limited to 1 in every 20,000 booster packs, but there has still been no official word on whether the card is real or a myth, much like the Mew under the truck folklore from the original games.
