Star Fox Creator Faces Backlash For Using AI In Game Development

Star Fox creator Takaya Imamura has found himself at the center of controversy after expressing his enthusiasm for AI in game development.

“Good morning,” he said on X. “Right now, I’m testing game development using AI. As I keep bouncing ideas back and forth with the AI, I end up feeling just like back in the day when I used to chat with programmers about ‘let’s do it this way, let’s try that’ while making games… What an incredible era we’ve entered.”

Commenters were quick to point out the ethical issues of using AI, and how generative models are built on stolen work. Others warned that “using it will lead to a complete loss of trust,” pointing to Level-5 and the recent Layton backlash. Then there’s the irony. “You worked on a game that is about destroying AI from taking over planets and life itself and the game ends with AI being destroyed,” one fan replied. “Now you’re using AI to make games?”

AI is something I simply can't ignore, so I'm experimenting with it as a test.

Under heavy fire from commenters, Imamura responded, “I completely understand your point. However, given my profession, AI is something I simply can’t ignore, so I’m experimenting with it as a test. I’m not a programmer, so I’m genuinely amazed by how AI can fill in that gap and actually help me turn my ideas into a working game.

"I am in a position where I am conducting research on game development at university," he continued.

This only drew yet more backlash. “I completely understand that perspective,” one fan wrote. “However learning programming *is* part of creating that art, so giving that task to an AI inherits that you take away artistic control. The game one would create using AI as coding would certainly lessen as an art.”

Commenters also noted the environmental impacts and how AI is accelerating greenhouse gas emissions. For example, data centers are predicted to use between 4.2 and 6.6 billion cubic meters of water annually by 2027, not to mention how they pollute local ecosystems with chemical waste and rely heavily on fossil fuels to run their specialized processors.
