I hope you weren't waiting for VR to get more affordable. The price of the Steam Frame has been revealed, and it's not pretty.
As announced by Valve, the Steam Frame will officially set you back $1,059 - and that's for the cheaper model. If you want more memory, you'll have to fork over $1,299.
I am sure it will come as no surprise to learn that we have the ongoing RAM crisis to thank for this. As generative AI leads to a RAM demand that suppliers cannot keep up with, the gaming industry is finding itself charged even more to get the parts it needs. This increased cost of doing business is then passed on to the consumer, leading to huge hardware price increases.
Due to this, we often see hardware go up in price, not down. Indeed, the console giants - Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft - have all upped their prices as the console generation has gone on, whereas usually the opposite is true. This has cemented gaming as a very expensive hobby - and VR as an even more expensive niche within that hobby, a stigma it was already struggling to shake.
It is a shame, because the Steam Frame does look pretty neat. The main appeal here is that you don't need to buy anything else to make it work - it is a PC unto itself, so you can buy and access all your games within the headset. Better yet, it comes with Half-Life: Alyx, so you'll already have something to play.
