As you've probably already seen, there have been some major shakeups in the world of Halo this week, with Xbox announcing that Activision will make the next mainline title in the series and a "small team" at Halo Studios will support the current games on the market.
Not only is that terrible news for the employees that have lost their jobs at Halo Studios, but it also puts a spanner in the works for any potential Halo 2 and 3 remakes that might have been in the pipeline following Halo: Campaign Evolved.
In fact, a Halo 2 remake was even teased in Campaign Evolved itself, with Sergeant Johnson proclaiming in a secret cutscene that he'd "see you in the sequel". Alas, it seems that sequel may never come to pass.
Here at Pure Xbox, we really, really enjoyed what Halo Studios cooked up with Halo: Campaign Evolved (we literally gave it a 10/10), but it also wasn't a massive surprise that sales appeared to be under par. After all, Halo 1 is a game we've played many times over the past 25 years, and plenty of people won't have been that interested in revisiting it.
Perhaps a Halo 2 remake could have interested the masses a little bit more — especially if they put multiplayer into it this time — but to be honest it's hard to see how it would have differed that much from Campaign Evolved. It would have been great for the fans, but perhaps struggled to generate as many sales as Xbox wanted it to.
