League of Legends' K-pop-style idol group, K/DA, are back with Firestarter, with an accompanying music video from Arcane animator Fortiche.
Yes, folks, you read that right. The leaks and the rumors were, in fact, true: K/DA is back, and man, are they stylin'. Ahri, Akali, Evelynn, and Kai'Sa are looking a bit different this time around, courtesy of some red and black visuals brought to life in the style of League of Legends' hit Netflix show, Arcane. Moreover, there's a slightly rougher feel to the entire track, and as an avid K-pop stan, I absolutely love it.
Featuring MIYEON and SOYEON of K-pop titans i-dle one more, newcomers Sophie Powers and Mimi Webb also join the roster this time around, replacing Madison Beer and Jaira Burns. The track itself does feel uniquely K/DA and fits with their overall sound which, given the switch-up on vocalists, is pretty impressive. I felt like both True Damage and Heartsteel suffered a little without their original singers, but K/DA feels just as #girlboss as ever.
The video itself is also very different from its predecessors, this time created by Arcane studio Fortiche in its own unique style. It's a new look for the animator - the likes of Bite Marks still felt like a League of Legends cinematic versus a music video - but I'm absolutely obsessed with it. Currently strapping on my dance shoes and channeling my inner K-pop demon.
Of the three tracks that Riot has released in the run-up to Worlds, this is easily my favorite. I didn't really get on with Live My Life, and while I like Know My Name (it's grown on me, much like Giants did), this is a song I've immediately fallen in love with. The video helps - it's slick as hell - but more generally, this feels like the closest Riot has come to recapturing some of that OG League magic.
A part of me is silently hoping for a Remix Rumble-style moment for the Worlds finale, with all of League's music groups coming together in the same style as it did with TFT. We'll have to wait and see, but for now, Firestarter may just kick EVAN off the top of my K-pop playlist.
