Outside of the first Pokemon Winds and Waves trailer, Pokemon fans have had very few official looks at Pokemon Winds and Waves. Yes, there have been copious leaks regarding everything from starter evolutions to returning features from Legends Z-A, but when it comes to confirmed information, The Pokemon Company is keeping things under wraps. This month, that should change.
This year has been a massive one for the Pokemon franchise, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. There have been special events throughout the Pokemon games, like the debut of Mega Mewtwo in Pokemon GO (which celebrated its 10th anniversary), major partnerships with high-profile brands like LEGO, and some new Pokemon TCG sets that celebrate the game’s storied history.
For August, the competitive scene will get its chance to join in the celebration with the Pokemon World Championships in San Francisco. Qualified competitors and ticketed spectators will flock to the Bay Area to see who is crowned World Champion for Pokemon GO, Pokemon UNITE, Pokemon TCG, and Pokemon Champions on August 30th. And, in addition to Pokemon Worlds, The Pokemon Company is also debuting a new fan experience called Pokemon XP that will run parallel to Worlds, offering fans new ways to immerse themselves in the world of Pokemon.
Pokemon Worlds and now XP are a major moment for Pokemon and, historically, that has meant both a reflection on the brand’s past and a tease towards its future. What’s next for Pokemon GO? What new sets are on the horizon for the trading card game? Where will the Pokemon World Championships set up its home base next year? All these questions and more are usually answered in an exciting sizzle reel at the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday night, August 30th.
But while those announcements are a highlight of the event and will be fueling an electric atmosphere in the Chase Center on August 30th, the big question on everyone’s minds is what Pokemon will reveal about Winds and Waves. Could we see the full evolutionary line for the starters Gecqua, Pombom, and Browt? Will there be a Pokemon Winds and Waves release date announcement? Will we get our first look at the cover art and the Legendary Pokemon that will be a key part of Winds and Waves? There are so many possibilities, which makes the Pokemon World Championships finals on Sunday August 30th, specifically the finale of the show in the evening, a must-watch.
It’s also possible that we don’t get any announcements or reveals about Pokemon Winds and Waves, so fans should brace themselves for potential disappointment. I don’t think that will be the case because this year’s Worlds is going to be the biggest event The Pokemon Company has ever put on. There will be more people in the area thanks to Pokemon XP, more eyes on the panels and Twitch streams because of the rewards, and it fits perfectly for Pokemon Winds and Waves to be that one final thing. Last year’s event concluded with the reveal of Pokemon XP, so it only makes sense for them to boost potential interest in the event moving forward by showcasing what the future holds for the brand.
Pokemon Winds and Waves has been kept tightly under wraps, but I expect that Worlds will be the beginning of its promotional roll-out. If the game is to release in 2027, maybe in September if rumors are to be believed, then there are a lot of Pokemon that need to be revealed. Potentially the most Pokemon ever included in a game.
