In typical anime series, and fiction in general, character deaths are purely part of the story. Oftentimes, fans get very attached to certain characters who meet a very grim fate later on in the series, and the amount of sadness that they feel because of this genuinely speaks to how well-written the series is in the first place, since a fictional character can evoke such strong emotions.
However, while character deaths tend to make fans sad across the board, sometimes, there are those that rub the fans the wrong way completely. In a sense, some deaths can make the fans either not have the same relationship with what they're viewing or even outright hate it. One Piece has always been a franchise that has had an interesting relationship with death, in the sense that it is actually not very common in the series. Oftentimes, characters who are thought to be dead come back to the story in one way or another. However, it is because of this that certain deaths hit way harder when they actually happen. There is no greater example of this being the case than with Ace's death.
Due to being Luffy's brother who had a very tough life, fans were biting their nails during the events of the legendary Marineford arc. Just when everything seemed good for Ace and Luffy to escape, Ace's death came in a very sudden way that rubbed some fans the wrong way and felt contrived to them, though it played perfectly with his character arc. Although fans were very sad to see such a beloved character go, it remains one of the series' greatest moments.
In the video game, there is a famous quote that says 'there are no happy endings in Night City', and this rings just as true for the anime as well. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows David Martinez in his quest to become a legendary mercenary of Night City and brings him into direct conflict against the power of the mighty Arasaka Corporation.
Of course, these deaths can be attributed to his entire crew, but none made fans more teary-eyed than David and Rebecca's demise. David made his promise to his mother in a roundabout way but still ended up dying, whereas Rebecca's death was sudden and brutally violent. Due to the sadness this series inflicted on fans, many still hold the deaths of these beloved characters deep in their hearts.
