The separation of realism and graphical prowess may finally be getting a significant leak. NVIDIA has released DLSS 5 into the wild, and has officially confirmed its first participant. NBA 2K27 launches later this week, and for those who purchase the PC version and have access to an NVIDIA RTX 50 Series card, will be granted access to the latest AI technology DLSS 5 on September 3rd. More games launched this week with DLSS integration, just not version 5. This is the version that has received scrutiny for the changes to facial realism. NBA 2K27 will utilize DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to usher out the realism on launch day. Those who have either a desktop with an RTX 50 card, or a laptop or even using GeForce NOW Ultimate, will have access to the latest tech. Visual Concepts worked very closely in a partnership with NVIDIA to raise this game to another level. Lighting will naturally pass through player ears, change how the skin looks, and will catch hair differently. The facial geometry will be kept intact since these are scanned players.
“DLSS 3D-guided neural rendering helped boost the visual quality of our materials and lighting, bringing a real jump to photorealism across the game,” said Peter Kavic, Senior Producer at Visual Concepts.
The main image being showcased is All-Star guard Cade Cunningham from the Detroit Pistons. Not to mention, any crowd shots or anyone on the sideline will also have noticeable changes. Subsurface Scattering is the name of the game for casting precise shadows beneath the nose and chin. The technology will also refine ambient occlusion for more shadow definition across items and apparel. RTX 5090 owners will be able to play the game up to 370 FPS with Multi-Frame Gen 6X and Super Res Performance Mode in 4K. The RTX 5080 can handle 233 at the same, with more of an increase when dropping to 1440p. Players will need to toggle this on and off in-game by hitting F9 on the keyboard once the latest driver is downloaded.
Previous DLSS tech was focused on reconstructing an existing scene data to create maximum quality images, additional frames and cleaner ray-traced lighting. DLSS 5 will bring in 3D-Guided Natural Rendering as the next logical step for AI that will generate rich lighting and material details. It will fill in the gaps that devs needed to strip away in the past due to performance costs. This allows them to realize their original artistic vision.

Up until now, frames were generated from text prompts. Now, 3D-Guided Neural Rendering will use the game's engine rendered frame, complete with artist-designed geometry, texture and lighting buffers for its foundation. DLSS 5 is the final rendering stage on the graphics pipeline as injects scenes with more lifelike lighting and materials while also ensuring the engine frame defines what must remain. A new real-time AI model was created with three pillars: preserve the artistic intent, guarantee temporal stability and achieve execution speeds in the milliseconds. The enrichment of scenes is the result of DLSS 5, which will help further push the bar of visual fidelity.
