Following the low sales of Halo: Campaign Evolved, Microsoft has chosen to lay off most of Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries, employees and hand over management of the Halo franchise to Activision, the publisher of Halo's longtime rival FPS franchise Call of Duty.
This effectively means that Halo Studios will now function as a small support studio for Halo's previously existing games while Activision constructs a new team to develop the next Halo title, much to the concern of many Halo fans, given the many differences between COD and Halo and unpopular multiplayer and campaign mechanics seen in recent COD titles.
To get a better understanding of what a Halo game published by Activision may look like, here's a look back at eight Halo-like FPS titles that Activision previously published featuring similar stories, characters, enemies, and overall gameplay to the mainline Halo games.
In 2014, Bethesda and MachineGames successfully rebooted the Wolfenstein franchise with Wolfenstein: The New Order, but this wasn't the first time the Wolfenstein franchise had been rebooted, as Activision and Raven Software previously rebooted the series in 2009 with an underrated game simply called Wolfenstein.
Like many other Wolfenstein games, this reboot follows B.J. Blazkowicz during World War II as he sets out to stop the Nazis from utilizing experimental technology and supernatural forces to defeat the Allies, with many of this game's enemies including common Nazi soldiers, armored heavy troopers using Sentinel Beam-like weapons, undead Nazis, and Black Sun dimension creatures.
While Wolfenstein doesn't feature any aliens or driveable vehicles like Halo, its core gameplay and enemy designs are fairly similar to those found in Halo, with its more armored and mutated enemies resembling Covenant Brutes, Elites, and the Flood in their combat.
The late 2000s and early 2010s was a time when both Halo and COD were arguably at their peak in terms of popularity and quality, with one of the best COD titles of that era being Call of Duty: World at War, which surprisingly featured a fair number of similarities to Halo games.
