I'm sure by the time you're reading this you've either watched the Netflix preview, watched someone else watch the Netflix preview, or it's late enough that the full thing is available for the non-Netflix having proletariat. So, how about a few extra details, like a tease about how protagonist Lucia and Jason's relationship works mechanically courtesy of Rockstar co-head Rob Nelson?
"There is a system that tracks what sort of criminal you are. And then there is also a relationship system," Nelson tells the monolithic Eye Gee En in a massive ole interview with the GTA 6 lead. "They're separate. You manage the relationship in the way you hopefully nurture any relationship - which is by spending time together. So being in the open world and exploring together or doing activities together, playing pool or mini golf or kayaking; normal slice of life things. Or, robbing stores together, robbing banks together. However players want to spend that time together, it will have a positive impact on the relationship."
Nelson goes on to explain that we are introduced to Lucia and Jason's relationship at a point where they're deciding to "give it a shot," but the act of just playing the main story or doing a few other missions isn't necessarily enough to keep them entwined romantically. "You’ll have to keep them together by spending a bit of time together in the open world, and then hopefully that will reinforce your connection to them and increase your investment in their story," Nelson explained. That manifests in things like texting the other character, or just asking to meet up. Ignoring a text from one or the other, which might even just be about locking up the house, may also negatively affect their relationship.
Of course, having to balance a romantic relationship raises a question: what if you don't try to keep them together? "The narrative is structured in such a way that the circumstances they find themselves in require them to stay together for most of the story and work together," says Nelson. "At the very least they will get through most things as partners in crime. I don’t want to say too much more about this because I don’t want to spoil anything."
What Nelson does note is that you can just sort of ignore it if you want to, as he rhetorically asked himself, "Could we also provide mechanisms for people to just opt out of it if they're not into it? If they feel like ‘I don't want a relationship in this?’ That's what we're going to find out. It's not something that we want to foist upon players." Alternatively, there are other ways to increase the pair's bond outside of what's been mentioned above; maybe you go shopping, or do some exercise together, or even get a haircut.
One thing that's worth noting, according to this list of 69 details pointed out by Aye Gi N, is that depending on how close Lucia and Jason are to one another, the story may shake out differently. Worth keeping in mind as you toss up between speeding through the main story or taking a leisurely romantic ride through a swamp.
I'd also like to remind you that, following the firing of 34 Rockstar staffers last year and in the lead-up to a trial involving the studio and said developers coming next month, these former workers are asking you to support their legal fund as opposed to boycotting the game. And to be honest, if you can afford that $80 video game, I imagine you can chip in too!
