Throughout the years, every developer has had their experimental phase at one point or another, and that has generally had them stretching outside their comfort zone into some lesser-traveled genres.
The strategy genre is one of those where so many developers have tried their hand at it at some point or another. It's a genre that is ripe for the picking for so many different franchises, and many developers have actually given it a go to some surprising results.
We're going to check out some strategy games from famous developers that you might not be too familiar with.
Gladius is one of the more interesting games that LucasArts has ever made. It was during their heyday too, when they'd churn out Star Wars hits every other year, it seemed like. Gladius is its own beast though, and it's got some real depth to it. You build up your team of Gladiators and fight throughout the land, and once combat starts, it's a turn-based affair that relies a lot upon how well you prepared your gladiators for the battle.
It's a really cool and different kind of game that definitely deserved a sequel, but the niche nature of it kind of halted any hope for that to happen as we were just entering the third-person shooter era of gaming. Regardless, it's a game that is better than it has any right to be, with a wealth of different gladiators to recruit and different features for each that make it seem like you're really building a team here. There is also a compelling campaign holding it all together, and it stands up as an underrated gem from the PS2 era.
Vandal Hearts is one of the more underappreciated series that Konami has ever made, and, honestly, it's one that they should probably unearth sometime soon, as they could use a jolt. It's a strategy RPG that takes place on a grid-like battlefield much like Final Fantasy Tactics, but here, the action is way bloodier and way more colorfully animated. The battle animations are brutal and vicious, with blood fountains erupting from your foes during your finishing strikes, lending some much-needed weight to this genre that often lacks a punch with its attack animations.
