I usually go after the platinum trophy or aim for 100% completion whenever I play a JRPG, even ones I didn't enjoy all that much, just to see if I can find a hidden detail I might appreciate. One day, out of nowhere, it hit me that maybe JRPGs aren't as long as we make them out to be if we focus solely on the main story, but there's so much interaction and side content that the game ends up taking longer than expected.
Just the other day, I finished Another Eden Begins in 25 hours, but when I went for 100% completion, my playtime reached 60 hours. Outside of true time sinks like Persona or Trails, many JRPGs have a main campaign length that is relatively manageable, sitting right around 40 hours, which is expected. So, keeping that in mind and optimizing my time, why not look into the fastest JRPGs to hit 100% completion?
They will still take a sweet chunk of time, but it is far quicker than investing 80, 90, or maybe 100 hours. So if you are looking for a JRPG to call your own, complete everything it has to offer, and avoid sinking your entire month into a single title, I invite you to check out this list.
The time for 100% completion recorded on the HowLongToBeat website will be used as a baseline reference. I'll only include games with enough side content to be considered completionist.
To be fair, there are probably faster games to hit 100% completion in than Chrono Trigger, but including them would mean filling this list exclusively with JRPG-inspired indies, which I love, but it feels like a bit of a cheat. I want games whose playtime sits right between a standard playthrough and a completionist run. Plus, Chrono Trigger is constantly praised for its pacing, so it deserves to be highlighted here for having an optimized completionist playtime as well.
Hear me out: spending 41 hours to get every single ending in Chrono Trigger is remarkably low, especially considering there are 13 endings, plus an extra one in the DS version. It was not the JRPG that invented New Game+, but it certainly reinvented the feature, making it more creative and engaging than ever. Other extra content includes secret bosses, ultimate weapons for every party member, and, amid all of that, getting to explore more of the backstory for our wonderful cast.
