Remember when it was controversial for in-game cosmetics to cost as much as a full game? Those were the days. Now, we're up against skins that cost you a couple of hundred bucks.
Well, to be fair, Overwatch's Le Sserafim Collectors Bundle includes 15 skins, and a bunch of accompanying emotes, victory poses, icons, and the like. But thanks to the skins it includes being among the priciest in the game, Blizzard isn't willing to part with this bundle for less than 20,000 coins - which, translated into actual money, comes out to about $200.
What's even better is that Overwatch wants you to think you're getting some sort of bargain here. The bundle says that it is on a 74 percent discount, down from 79,700 coins. That refers to how much it would cost to buy everything in the bundle individually. By my calculations, that would set you back about $700.
The bundle includes Ultra skins, which are a step above Legendary, but below Mythic. Unlike Mythic skins, they can still be purchased with coins, but it'll cost you 3500 coins, or about $35 a pop.
As highlighted by a Le Sserafim fan account, Overwatch has since shot up the Steam revenue charts by 27 places in recent days. There's no way of knowing if this bundle can take the credit for that, but getting enough peole to cough up $200 definitely would have helped.
Once again, this has kicked off a debate about Overwatch's skin prices. Many are calling on fans to stay strong and avoid Ultra skins, in protest of their prices, in the hope that Blizzard knocks them down. There are a few people defending the price point, but when you take a step back, this value is completely artificial; the price is a made-up number for a completely digital item that Blizzard has infinite copies of.
We'll have to see if there's any response to the backlash this time around. In the meantime, the community isn't happy with Blizzard - or those who are actually buying the skins.
