A new Starcraft game has been revealed at Blizzcon 2026, and Blizzard’s fresh take on the classic strategy series is an open-world shooter.
You can put the speculation to bed for now, because a new Starcraft game is really happening. Blizzard has finally confirmed the return of its beloved space series, over a decade since Starcraft 2 wrapped up. Rather than an RTS, however, what was confirmed at Blizzcon 2026 is the "open-world shooter" that's long been rumored. Dan Hay took to the stage to talk about how "a very specific Blizzard cinematic changed the course of my life," and reveal how, 28 years later, he's here to deliver the next chapter in the Starcraft saga.
The teaser trailer for this next Starcraft game shows a Dominion Marine in training, earning his suit and loading up for his first big mission, only to fall prey to the onrushing forces of the Zerg. "Recruits, you will become more than just soldiers, you will become heroes," the voiceover rings as his tag is cast into a bloodied tray alongside his fallen fellows.
Head to the official website and you'll find a message: "The sons and daughters of the Dominion answered the call when mankind needed them most. Their courage held the line. Their sacrifice brought us another day. Now the call comes to you. Carry their strength forward. No matter the cost."
Frustratingly, that's all the details we've been given for now - and it might be quite some time until we hear anything more. "Starcraft returns in 2030," the teaser concludes. Hopefully, we'll find out some additional details as the show rolls on. If not, at least it's something, but it's going to be an agonizing three to four year wait in the meantime.
What we do know is that Hay's involvement lines up with previous reports from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who noted that the former Far Cry boss would be heading up Blizzard's Starcraft shooter after moving across from Ubisoft in 2022. That might give some clues to how this open-world shooter will play, but I'm praying we get a better look soon.
