We're approaching the tail end of the 2020s, and even though this console generation has been a bit disappointing on the platform exclusive front, the quality of third-party games we've played has already made this one of the best decades for gaming in history. We've still got three years (and one GTA 6) to go, and yet the number of all-time classics released for modern systems is almost overwhelming.

The good news is that, for RPG fans, many of the generation's best games have also been role-playing games. While they fit into a wide range of subgenres, these games stand as the best RPGs released since the year 2020. Some are multi-award winners, some flew under the radar, but if you missed any of them, you should put them on your list of games to go back and play, because each one is an unforgettable experience that any gamer can enjoy.
In this case, "since 2020" covers any game that was released after December 31st, 2020.
CRPGs aren't for everyone, and CRPGs as in-depth as Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous certainly aren't, but when a game executes on roleplaying complexity to this extent, it has to be acknowledged. There's just too much depth, too many ways the narrative can branch and evolve based on your actions, to pretend that Wrath of the Righteous isn't one of the best RPGs of the decade.
It starts with Mythic Paths, essentially alternate classes, except these determine what kind of deity you want to become. There are 10 in total, ranging from self-explanatory options like Angel or Lich to more mysterious offerings like Swarm-That-Walks or Gold Dragon. Your chosen Mythic Path will also influence which companions will join you. Speaking of companions, there are a ton of them, again ranging from recognizable characters to unique allies like a talking gauntlet or a succubus. The story's progression can also shift based on how your companions' stories progress. There's a lot here, and if it weren't so well-written, it wouldn't work, but Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous tells a remarkable story amid all these systems, making it an absolute must-play for hardcore RPG fans.
FormSoftware may always be the king of the soulslike genre, but one of the most impressive things that Lies of P does is make you completely forget that what you're playing isn't a FromSoft game. Other than a well-told story that is coherent outside of item descriptions, the soulslike feel of this journey through Krat is pitch-perfect and consistently rewarding.
It's not fair to only compare Lies of P to FromSoft, though, because it brings a lot of its own ideas to the table. The parry mechanic is one, a blend of Sekiro and Dark Souls' systems that is somehow harder to master than both of them. Then there's the weapon customization, which lets you combine your preferred elements from two different weapons, creating a hybrid moveset so you never have to settle for anything but the ideal tool for your build. Legion arms add another exciting twist, especially when they're fully upgraded. When you consider that it also nails its enemy and boss designs, Lies of P is just a beautifully refined action RPG, one of the very few that can hang with FromSoftware's oeuvre and not be overshadowed.
