A Reddit moderator has been ordered to pay $4.5 million to Nintendo after buying and selling pirated games for the Nintendo Switch and ignoring their lawsuits.
Back in 2024, Nintendo went after Reddit moderator James Williams – also known as Archbox – alleging that he “has been involved in creating, operating, supporting, and promoting a network of Pirate Shop” for a long time. Williams never responded to the first suit, prompting Nintendo to try again.
In October of last year, the Japanese gaming giant demanded $4.5 million in compensation from Williams, focusing on 30 games that he had allegedly been involved in pirating – including Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Pikmin 4. They also sought a default judgment, seeing as the Reddit mod hadn’t responded to them in court at the first time of asking.
Now, almost a year on, Williams has been ordered to pay the full amount to Nintendo and shut down any ‘pirate shops’ that he “operates” or has any “control” over.
Nintendo awarded $4.5 million from Reddit mod lawsuit
As reported by Aftermath, the Western District Court of Washington ruled in favor of Nintendo of America on September 23, as Williams did not appear in court.
“To effectuate this injunction, Williams shall immediately disable access to all online ‘shops’ that he operates or otherwise controls which have offered to the public extensive libraries of pirated Nintendo Switch games for download,” the court clerks added.
Since the initial court filing, Williams left his post as a moderator for the SwitchPirates subreddit, with many posters actually siding with Nintendo over things.
