Spider-Man has always been my favorite superhero. Luckily for me and other Spider-Man fans, there has never been a shortage of Spider-Man video games, and he's one of the easiest superheroes to translate to the video game medium thanks to his skillset and angsty storylines. With so many opportunities to innovate, Spider-Man games tend to push the boundaries of superhero video games as developers bring the character to our screens.
As each Spider-Man game was released, game developers leaned into his agility, acrobatics, and unique skillset like web slinging, Spidey sense, and wall crawling to create unique game design and shifted the design philosophy of superhero games to make the most of the superheroes' abilities. Marvel's now bringing out more games based on other heroes, such as Wolverine, and tracing back on how superhero games have arrived here is an interesting story.
Spider-Man (2002) was one of the very first games I played. It was based on the Tobey Maguire movie, with some additional enemies from Spidey's rogue gallery. Being able to web-swing around New York, hide from the bad guys in shadowed corners, and taking on enemies like Shocker and Vulture was exhilarating, and it had a great sense of humor that paired well with the web-slinger's (admittedly cheesey) quips.
I have a lot of fond memories of this game, but it also did a lot for the superhero genre. It was one of the first superhero games at all, and its game design was based on Spider-Man's abilities, giving it verticality and opening its environment to a range of opportunities as it took into account things like wall-crawling and zipping across the room and to buildings.
Spider-Man 2 is the direct sequel to Spider-Man (2002), and changed a lot from its predecessor. It kept the heart, the humor, and the narrator, but the mechanics were completely different. Instead of web-slinging from the sky and being unable to actually touch the streets of NYC, the city opened up, and you could swing right from the ground.
Most amazing was that it was a very early version of an open-world, and brought in mini events like robberies that make you feel like you're in a living city and adapting to it. Superhero games would go on to make these kind of random events a staple of the genre, but a lot of that is built on the foundations of Spider-Man 2.
I'm a big RPG fan specifically because of the amount of control they give you over the game's story and characters, and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is the closest we've come to a mainstream superhero RPG. Web of Shadows hands ownership of its story to you, and gives a branching narrarative that lets you influence the relationships, missions, and its conclusion.
