Free-to-play MMORPG Aion 2 has taken action against bots, gold farmers, and suspect trades, but says some account locks are for your safety.

Aion 2 developer NC has announced that it's just taken action against almost 5,000 user accounts found to be involved in botting, gold farming, or other methods that "disrupt the game economy." The new MMORPG has rocketed up the Steam charts, quickly becoming the fourth most-played game on Valve's platform behind the ever-present giants of CS2, Dota 2, and PUBG. That makes it a potential target for bad actors, and so its creators are taking quick action to attempt to preserve the in-game balance.

Using bots to grind your character level or farm gold that is sold to other players, often via RMT (real-money trading) outside of the game's economy, is a problem that almost all MMOs have to face. NC says it is "continuously monitoring in-game activity and the overall service environment," and has sent out this wave of bans to target Aion 2 players who are employing such tactics in an attempt to get ahead or profit from selling gold.

In particular, the developer has focused on two particular groups. The first contains the "use of macros, bots, or other unauthorized programs, and organized play patterns consistent with gold farming or real-money trading." However, NC has also been watching for "abnormal trading patterns that disrupt the game economy."

The developer says it has just restricted a total of 4,996 accounts in line with these rules, although notes that such measures "are only applied after review, in line with the operation policy." If you've just been blasting your way through the game, you should be in the clear, as the developer says "normal play, including long grinding sessions, is not affected."

Separately from these actions, NC adds that "a small number of accounts have been temporarily locked as a precaution," specifically when access from a certain device suggests that an account might have been compromised. "A security lock is not a penalty," it explains, "it protects your account and your items until the situation can be verified." If this applies, or you believe you've been blocked in error, you should contact Aion 2's customer support.

I certainly don't envy the fight against botting and gold farmers; technology allowing such behaviour continues to improve, and having a popular free-to-play game means it's relatively easy for potential troublemakers to set up a new account. I'm glad to see NC taking a firm stance against such behaviour early on to try and preserve the in-game economy for all.
