There is no shortage of great turn-based RPGs, but given how long the genre has been around, it's inevitable that many games get swept under the rug. There are decades of games for players to get through, so when you start looking for the best a genre has to offer, you are going to go straight for the big names with lots of acclaim and attention.
However, beneath the surface lies a treasure trove of perfection that has been untouched for decades. Beyond Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Persona, many amazing games have been forgotten by the passage of time, trapped on aging hardware, or simply overshadowed by larger franchises, all waiting to be played and adored for the very first time.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant is perhaps the perfect example of a masterpiece that has simply been left behind by the industry. Set in an alternate version of the early 20th century, the game combines historical figures and locations with cosmic horror, supernatural creatures, and a surprisingly comedic cast as they untangle the magical conflict that binds them together.
The combat system is where the game really comes into its own. Attacks use the Judgment Ring system, requiring you to time button presses as a moving indicator crosses designated sections, turning traditional turns into far more complex actions that allowed the game to stand out from the crowd back then, even if its own crowd has largely moved on.
Skies of Arcadia takes adventure to the next level, sending you to the skies as Wyve, a young pirate in search of adventure. The setting itself is a major draw, and because of that, exploration becomes a major part of how you progress and experience the universe, as you move between floating islands and continents over the course of dozens of hours.
Traditional turn-based battles form the foundation of the gameplay, but Skies of Arcadia also introduces ship battles and character abilities that elevate those conventions to new heights. Its colorful setting and optimistic tone make the game feel closer to a classic adventure story than the increasingly serious JRPGs that dominated the period. Sadly, without a modern port, that greatness is confined to just a few old-school pieces of hardware.
