Ancient China Has Never Looked So Good in Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember

Ancient China Has Never Looked So Good in Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember

Released three years ago, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja, developers of games such as Ninja Gaiden and Nioh, introduced the world to a new vision of the Han Dynasty. While a lot of gamers have gotten their introduction into Chinese history through the Dynasty Warriors franchise, this was something completely different.

The developers not only retold some historical events, but it was done in a flashy, fictional way, introducing monstrous demons and martial arts that defy physics all together. With that said, they created a compelling package, one that has earned a sequel under the name Wings of Ember. Everyone’s favorite historical figures remain intact, such as Guan Yu and Liu Bei, but we are introduced to another part in the lengthy Chinese history.

We were able to sit down with Wo Long 2 for a lengthy hands-on session both at Gamescom 2026 and after, experiencing the vast world and figuring out what has gone into recreating this ancient Chinese-themed souls-like.

Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember takes place roughly eight years after the end of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and the Battle of Guandu. Similar to other games in the genre, such as Nioh and Dark Souls, this isn’t a direct sequel in the sense of the same character, but the world itself. Players will take the role of a new nameless champion who has vengeance on his or her mind after Cao Cao lays waste to their village.

After this tragic event, the player’s character will join forces with Liu Bei and Sun Quan and undertake iconic battles from the Three Kingdoms period in China. Players will even start their adventure in events that set the groundwork for the era, such as the Battle of Changban and Battle of Red Cliffs. The latter of which was the vast area we got to experience in this demo.

From a gameplay perspective, Wo Long 2 plays similar to its predecessor did, but with some caveats. For starters, there will be additional actions that consume Spirit outside dodging and parrying. These are called Insight Skills, and they are meant to essentially deflect unique attacks from enemies, adding a considerable amount of stagger to their bar and gaining the upper hand on them. Most of the time, they don’t do a lot of damage but instead leave them open to punishing attacks.

This was probably our favorite thing about the demo. While there is an open environment that we’ll get into, it’s this new countering system that really struck home. The current parrying system remains here, and is arguably the system that will be used the most, but the Insight is a nice addition to add on top of it.

The rest of the combat isn’t too far off from what we’ve come to expect. A big chunk of combat revolves around parrying and breaking the guard of enemies, opening them up to a fatal strike. While Insight Skills are important and a big highlight of the sequel, the core design remains the same, especially outside of major boss encounters.
