As I look back on the long, complex history of open-world games and their meteoric rise to one of the industry's most popular genres, I'm reminded of just how far they have come, as well. What started as a wild idea about how far one could push game design philosophy became something far bigger, and it has since exploded into a staple in the industry.
Taking a step back is crucial then to discover what made the genre what it is today. Without the pioneers in the genre, the open-world genre wouldn't be anywhere close to where it is now. It's a testament to how far back this genre goes, as well.
All the games on this list had some sort of impact on the genre, be it big or small. Some of them influenced entire systems, while others were responsible for shaping the genre itself. No matter where a particular game falls on the scale, they're all worth talking about in some way or another.
Long before Grand Theft Auto made the jump from a top-down 2D game to a fully 3D open-world experience, the studio that would later become Rockstar North was attempting to create something truly revolutionary. Known then as DMA Design, this incredibly ambitious team had a vision of the future that simply could not be ignored.
Body Harvest is one of those games that feels altogether surreal, as it was a game that didn't even feel like it made any sort of sense for the Nintendo 64. And yet, its oddball story and goofy characters feel right at home on the platform. What makes it even more entertaining is how over the top and absurd the violence is, which makes it feel like some sort of 90s cartoon.
The impact that Body Harvest would have on the genre was enormous. DMA Design would later be rebranded as Rockstar North, where they would put everything they learned during Body Harvest to good use. Its design principles would go on to influence the development of Grand Theft Auto 3, setting the stage for open-world games for decades.
Growing up during the 1990s, becoming absolutely infatuated with superheroes and comic books went hand-in-hand with my video game obsession. The two seemed to coalesce rather well, and like so many of you, I felt that the open-world genre was the perfect pairing with a superhero game.
