I never actually played the original Doom. I mean, I wasn’t even alive when it came out, yet I understand the ripples it had throughout gaming history. Nor do I have much experience with the Warhammer universe, or even the first Boltgun title.
And yet here I am, standing before Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, appreciating a game that respects and understands its ancestors while building on their legacy with deadly beauty and grace. And you know what? Even for me, who hasn’t played the originals, it didn’t matter.
Boltgun 2 is a game anyone can play, anytime, because it’s so simple, yet so stylish and polished. In a world where everyone screams about graphical fidelity, wanting every detail to mimic reality, from strands of thread on a jacket to specks of sand on the beach, this title proves what matters most, first and foremost, is a damn good game.
I can’t even get into the actual game before waxing about the art style a bit. This game feels very reminiscent of early Wolfenstein/Doom-style FPS games, down to the pixelated graphics and 2.5D enemy models. And even now, in this day and age, that look and feel is so nostalgic, like a warm hug from the days of yore.
But if you think the game lacks detail because of the art direction, you couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, the style gives the team plenty of room to express themselves. The colours pop: rooms become blood-soaked while machines and engines flash neon in the gloom.

Demons and brightly coloured Marines of all varieties rush you down with bloodlust, and you mop the floor with them. Your goal is simple: paint the world red with devilish glee. It’s unsubtle but glorious. I mean, why would a game like this try to be subtle? It owns the chaos, and delights in the mayhem. Boltgun knows what it is, and where it came from, and it asks you, wasn’t it just so sweet?
