While Sportia is the first PC game from Hermit Crab Studio, this isn't their first rodeo. They've been developing casual games for Barcelona, Manchester City and other European football clubs.
At gamescom 2026, we were told that the upcoming title Sportia is an "adventure-style exploration sandbox where you are a soccer player from the 90s -- the golden age -- and you came up in this crazy world of sports." Despite what seems to be a football focus, the game includes several other sports, aiming to blend arcade gameplay with an adventure style.
There have been so many games recently that try to blend arcade and simulation gameplay, and it hasn't always worked out. Hermit instead wants to fully lean into the arcade environment and throw you into a world where you'll try various sports, such as archery, paragliding, and of course, football. Or soccer, as we'd call it here in the States.
If this sounds a lot like Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, you'd be right, though Sportia does promise a bit of Brazilian flair, which makes sense given its focus on being a soccer player from the 90s (though that 2002 Brazilian World Cup team is arguably better than their '94 championship squad). Ironically, an apt comparison during a demonstration of soccer football is Super Mario Strikers, which doesn't shy away from its arcade roots.
The goal is to deliver a simple and accessible style of play that's easy to pick up and hard to put down. There's also a desire to fully embrace the Brazilian style and flair, which is something that's different from what you'd expect from a typical North American audience. That style and flair literally jump off the screen. Everything screams "Brazil," and honestly, I'd expect nothing less given the style of a player like Ronaldinho. The team at Hermit Crab set out to develop something that's uniquely them.
