Metroid Ravenous announced, launches January 2027 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2

During today's Nintendo Direct, the publisher and platform holder announced the next 2D Metroid game, called Metroid Ravenous.

The amazingly-titled game's first trailer showed us Samus being attacked by strange a variety of enemies that take her energy, as she seems to show a darker side of herself. "It's eat or be eaten," she says to an enemy at the end, with a concerning glint in her eye. It seems like a sequel to Mercury Steam's excellent Metroid Dread.

The game launches 28th January, 2027, and will come with a special edition two new amiibo figures. This isn't the first time we've heard about the game; it was initially leaked in a ratings board listing in Brazil.

Martin Robinson gave the previous game, Metroid Dread, a 5/5, calling the 2D title "A stylish, visually sumptuous return for 2D Metroid, and an adventure that proudly sits alongside the series' best". Ravenous looks set to continue where Dread left off, so here's hoping Mercury Steam and Nintendo can keep that level of quality alive.

It's also worth noting that the critically-acclaimed Nintendo Switch adventure seems to be the series' best-selling game: Metroid Dread shifted 2.9m copies worldwide in its first six months on sale, out-pacing the previous best-seller Metroid Prime. With that in mind, we can infer that both developer and publisher has had time (and money!) to cook with this title.
