Diablo 5 Director Joe Shely says that Blizzard’s new ARPG will put “planning and investment” first, in response to PoE founder Chris Wilson.
Diablo 5 Game Director Joe Shely has shared some details on how the new RPG is approaching combat and buildcrafting, emphasizing that it will put "planning and investment" at the heart of how strong your character is. That doesn't mean a complete removal of Diablo 4 style in-the-moment execution of movement, dodges, or combos, but it feels like a spiritual return to the older ethos of Blizzard circa Diablo 2, where your character's gear and skills were the defining factor in their success.
Shely doesn't specify the reason for his latest comments, but they feel like a direct response to a recent video shared by former Grinding Gear Games founder and Path of Exile Director Chris Wilson. In offering his thoughts on the Diablo 5 announcement, which were broadly optimistic and hopeful but with some caveats, Wilson raised the question of whether the upcoming ARPG would be aimed at "intelligence players or dexterity players."
Wilson explains that he's referring to "whether the game's fantasy is that it's your character being the trained warrior who is powerful and good at fighting, or whether you as the player need to have fast reflexes and actively dodge out of the way of incoming attacks." He remarks how Diablo and Diablo 2 were more towards the 'intelligence' end of the spectrum, whereas Diablo 4 places greater emphasis on active dodges and telegraphed boss attacks to move away from.
"The Diablo 5 development team has talked about continuing to innovate on combat with Diablo 5," Wilson notes. "I feel that this will probably result in an even larger 'dexterity player' focus for their combat model. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just not how I'd personally prefer to play Diablo games."
Shely's latest comments will likely be rather reassuring to Wilson. He writes via X that, "While Diablo 5 will continue to feature some DEX (moment-to-moment execution) mechanics, on balance the game will be an INT/STR game (planning and investment). We are designing to the core tenet of ARPGs that any challenge can be overcome with the right build."
As Wilson notes, ARPGs are always going to fall somewhere along this spectrum, and where you prefer to play will come down to your personal tastes. Path of Exile 2, for example, introduces a dodge roll that allows you to avoid many incoming forms of damage entirely, and I've found it to be tremendously satisfying to use.
Diablo 5 is currently planned to launch in Spring 2029 - a date Wilson thinks "feels like a very tight deadline" when comparing its timeline to the over eight years that PoE 2 has been in development. It'll likely be at least a while longer before we actually get to see how D5's combat plays out in practice, therefore, but combining these latest details with the likes of the new-look inventory suggest a more old-school feel is certainly in store.
