One Piece Creator Oda Has Already Unveiled The Role Of Luffy's Mother

One Piece is currently in the climax of the Elbaf arc, with Monkey D. Luffy going head-to-head with Nerona Imu. As the series edges closer to the end of this phenomenal arc, quite a lot of side characters start coming into the picture, including Luffy's very own family, such as the supreme leader of the Revolutionary Army, Monkey D. Dragon.

Dragon is a character One Piece fans have been waiting to see for a very long time. At the same time, the mystery of Luffy's mother persists to this day. Over the years, Eiichiro Oda has talked about Luffy's mother on quite a few occasions. What quite a lot of the fans do not know is that the creator of the series has already made clear that she will not make an appearance in the present timeline. Oda often makes rather brief appearances on Japanese networks, and these quotes almost never make it to the international fans. In 2022, Eiichiro Oda quite clearly stated that he had no intention of revealing Luffy's mother in the present timeline. This quote has now resurfaced on September 1, 2026, and fans prepare for what's to come with the Monkey D family accordingly.

Ever since the beginning of One Piece, mysteries surrounding Luffy's mother have been prevalent. It is no surprise to know that fans of the character of Monkey D. Luffy want to know about his background. When we were first introduced to Luffy, it was quite clear to see that he lived alone. Luffy was not even aware of the fact that he had a dad until the events of the Whole Cake Island arc. The vast majority of his childhood was spent with Sabo and Ace under the care of Dadan. Before that, Garp took on the responsibility of raising him while Dragon was working towards leading a perfect revolution.

Interestingly enough, Luffy's mother was never mentioned in all of this, and it doesn't appear that Eiichiro Oda intends to bring her into the story at any point in time. A while back, Mayumi Tanaka, the voice actor of Monkey D. Luffy in the One Piece anime, stated on a Japanese TV network that she has long been curious about Luffy's mother. To that end, she ended up reaching out to Eiichiro Oda and asked him about her role in the story, to which Oda responded that he was not going to involve her in the present timeline. According to her, this is what Eiichiro Oda stated:

"A young boy's adventure begins after he leaves his mother's arms. I want to tell this young boy's adventure story, so his mom is not part of it."

It isn't a surprise to know that Eiichiro Oda ends up killing off most mothers in the world of One Piece. This is because, according to him, the transition from a child to an adult can only happen when they leave their mother's arms. Something similar happened with Nami, and at the end of the Arlong Park arc, when the last one to give her a nudge was the spirit of Bellemere, her motherly figure. It was at this point that Nami truly transitioned into an adult, and for Luffy's mom to be directly involved in the story would mean that she would have to obstruct his freedom. In a sense, this is also precisely why Dragon has not been involved in Luffy's journey, because he cannot play the role of a parent while Luffy is trying to be free. As such, Luffy's mother simply isn't going to be involved in the story, at least in the present timeline.

As is the case with most mothers in One Piece, it is likely that Luffy's mom is dead already. Eiichiro Oda could go on to write a story about that and tie it to Monkey D. Dragon, but it is also possible that, just like Dragon himself, Luffy's mom is active in the Revolutionary Army.
