Last of Us Director Comments on God of War Laufey

Former Naughty Dog game director Bruce Straley apologized to the God of War Laufey development team after comments he made during an interview made the rounds on social media. Straley's mention of God of War Laufey was part of a broader discussion about the gaming industry in 2026.

During his time at Naughty Dog, Straley started as an artist for Crash Team Racing and the Jak and Daxter trilogy before working his way up as a co-art director for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Straley went on to direct Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, The Last of Us, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, each of which is considered among the best stories in PlayStation's library of console-exclusive games. Straley left Naughty Dog in 2017 after an 18-year career and went on to create Wildflower Interactive, an independent game studio, in March 2021.

Following an interview with Edge Magazine that discussed the state of the gaming industry, Straley used God of War Laufey as an example of how he felt AAA games were "boring" and lacking in innovative ideas despite also utilizing impressive graphics. Since then, the former Naughty Dog staffer took to Twitter to clarify his answer. Straley posted his apology to the God of War Laufey development team on September 18 and said that his example was used out of context. He later said that he believed major studios were lacking in risks and innovation within the AAA space and stated that it is not the fault of the developers. Straley said that he felt video games were unique due to being interactive experiences and stressed that studios should continue to push the boundaries of creativity to avoid losing the audience.

To add to his point, Straley claimed that the overwhelming success of games-as-a-service games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Overwatch has "eroded" the ability for studios to innovate and take risks. The former Uncharted director said that trying to replicate the success of the aforementioned titles was not a viable strategy for the gaming industry and claimed that there was a lack of "good leadership" from the people in charge. Straley wrapped up his apology by stating, "I stuck my foot in my mouth and mentioned Laufey, and that was my mistake."

Straley and his team at Wildflower Interactive are currently working on a new puzzle-platform title called Coven of the Chicken Foot, which was first unveiled during The Game Awards 2025. The plot of the upcoming fantasy title focuses on a witch named Gertie, who is joined by a mysterious companion on her journey through dark catacombs and plundered caves. The game's narrative will be unveiled through the environment and the discoveries that players will make. Though Coven of the Chicken Foot has no release date as of this writing, interested players can wishlist it on Steam.

As for God of War Laufey, the upcoming title from Santa Monica Studio will arrive on February 16. With several massive games planned to arrive within the first few months of 2027, time will tell how successful God of War Laufey will be compared to its predecessors.
