When Xbox announced its major shakeup of studios earlier this week, one of the companies that was affected was Obsidian, which is now officially part of the Bethesda group rather than Xbox Game Studios as it was beforehand.
This has naturally led to questions about what the future holds for Obsidian, but according to Bethesda boss Jill Braff, it's primarily just a "change in reporting structure" and won't lead to a roadmap reset (on Bethesda's side at least).
Here's a bit of what Braff told her employees in an email this week (via IGN):
"Today’s announcement is primarily a change in reporting structure. The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work."
"Feargus and the Obsidian leadership team will continue to lead Obsidian, with the studio reporting to me. Bethesda Game Studios will continue to lead the Fallout franchise. Together, the teams will build on their longstanding relationship and the early work already underway on a new Fallout project, with more to share in the months ahead."
"To be clear, we’re not resetting our roadmap or asking teams to change what they’re focused on. We’ll take the time to understand how teams can best support one another, and where closer partnership can benefit our players and fans."
Prior to this week, it had already been confirmed that Bethesda was working on Fallout 5, Fallout 3 Remastered and Fallout: New Vegas Remastered (amongst other things), but also that they'd been teaming up with Obsidian for a "new Fallout" project - so aligning the two companies makes sense in the wake of that news.
The shakeup does leave Xbox Game Studios looking very bare though, with just a few teams left under that banner. Other developers that have been moved from XGS this week include Rare and World's Edge.
