Some of these video game romances are so well-written that they rival the romances found in books and movies, with the added benefit that you can choose the path the romance takes.
My favorite romance stories in RPGs are the ones that have chemistry, a role in the story, and a lot of angst. These are the ingredients that go into a compelling romance that stand alongside the main storyline and even change the characters in ways that wouldn't happen otherwise. Only a few romances truly end up like that, but the ones that are there are truly great and make the game all the better. Not all the romances on this list do that, but they do complement their games in meaningful ways.
Cyberpunk 2077 has a lot of romance options of varying quality, but Judy's stands above the rest in terms of quality and her writing. She's intelligent, fiercely loyal, and appears enough in the main storyline to make an impression, but is outside it enough to make her feel like a welcome reprieve from all the chaos.
She's also a wonderful depiction of a lesbian romance and character in a video game, especially as she's the best written romance in Cyberpunk 2077. Judy's defined by her loyalty to people and her gang, and her calm, steady presence is like a balm for V.
Star Wars: The Old Republic has a lot of romance routes, with some hitting the mark and some missing. One of the most popular romances is Vette, who is a romance for the male Sith Warrior storyline. Vette is an unlikely romance match for the Sith Warrior, but this is an example of opposites attract at its very best.
Where Vette is unsure, the Sith Warrior is confident, where Vette is sneaky and funny, the Sith Warrior is like a battle ram with a dry sense of humor. Somehow, their clashing personalities are perfect for each other. They have incredible chemistry and some of the funniest lines and interactions in SWTOR.
The debate between Triss and Yennefer goes on and on, but Yen's connection to Geralt goes beyond the magic of a djinn. Both characters are parent figures for Ciri, and they both care for each other in ways that transcend any other relationship they have. They have baggage, but it's nowhere near the level of baggage Geralt has with Triss that, for me, makes Triss very difficult to romance.
