Finishing Onimusha: Way of the Sword doesn’t mean Musashi needs to start from scratch. New Game Plus lets players carry many important upgrades over to a new playthrough, but it also takes away much of the equipment progress built during the first run. That makes the second playthrough feel different from a normal restart. If you’re wondering what carries over into New Game+ and what to expect before starting a new game in Onimusha WoTS, read on.
New Game Plus, or NG+, is a second playthrough that becomes available after completing the main story. Instead of starting with a completely fresh Musashi, players can carry a bunch of important upgrades from their completed save into a new game.
Unfortunately, not everything will carry over to the NG+. Skills, charms, and Hozuki Pouches remain available, while most weapon upgrades, Red Souls, and story progress reset.
This makes NG+ different from simply starting a new game. Musashi already has the combat abilities learned during the first playthrough, so the early battles can feel more manageable. However, the sword and gauntlet still need to be upgraded again, and the story will have to be replayed from the beginning.
NG+ is also the main way to unlock Carnage difficulty, the game's hardest setting. After finishing the story once, players can choose to start a new game on Carnage or carry their completed save into NG+. Carnage is built around high-stakes combat, where a single hit can mean death.
Put simply, New Game Plus is a fresh story run with a partially upgraded Musashi. It rewards players for investing in abilities and charms during the first playthrough, while still making them rebuild their weapons and equipment as they progress.
The most important thing to understand is that abilities carry over, but most equipment upgrades do not. Musashi keeps his Awakened Oni abilities, including the Eye, Arm, and Leg, along with enhanced basic and special skills. That means the combat techniques learned during the first playthrough remain available from the beginning of NG+.
Hozuki Pouches and their upgrades also carry over, as do charms and their enhancements. These are worth investing in before finishing the story because they continue to provide their benefits during the second run.
