According to TMZ, legendary voice actor Mike McFarland passed away on September 9, 2026. McFarland had been a staple of the anime English dub industry since 1997. The star got his start by voicing Master Roshi in Funimation's English dub back in 1999, before landing major roles on One Piece as Buggy and Jean in Attack on Titan. McFarland also served as ADR Director for several series, including the original Dragon Ball, Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
McFarland's voice work also spanned several video games. Along with voicing Roshi, Baby, and Yajirobe in various Dragon Ball games, he voiced Caellach in Fire Emblem Heroes. Per TMZ, "Mike was surrounded by friends and family at a Dallas care facility... friends from the voice-over community gathered to sing him songs and tell him stories to keep his spirits up." McFarland's family requests that any donations be made to either Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
TMZ reported that Mike McFarland passed away following a battle with brain cancer. McFarland's illness was enough for him to pull out of Central Florida Comic Con last year in order to have surgery performed for his brain tumor. Come August of 2025, glioblastoma had fully developed.
It cannot be understated just how important Mike McFarland was to Dragon Ball's legacy in the United States, especially as ADR Director for the original series (which has a much more accurate and better-directed English dub than Dragon Ball Z). McFarland also served as ADR Director for virtually every single Dragon Ball film, of which Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero are especially impressive.
ADR Directors write the scripts that the voice actors perform for their dubs, so McFarland has played a key role in shaping Dragon Ball and One Piece's identities in the West since virtually the very beginning. The Dragon Ball series will not look the same without him, especially with Dragon Ball Super 2 on the horizon. Time will tell, but it's unlikely McFarland was able to provide any work for Dragon Ball Super: Beerus' upcoming English dub before passing away.

One Piece is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. The series follows protagonist Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirate crew as they explore the Grand Line to find the King of the Pirates' ultimate treasure, the One Piece, in order to become the next king. The manga's popularity helped it spin off into a larger media franchise, including an anime with more than 1,000 episodes.
