Squadron 42 has been delayed until Q2 2027 after creator Chris Roberts said he does not want the 12-year Star Citizen project competing with GTA 6 for attention.
Cloud Imperium Games announced Squadron 42 alongside Star Citizen in 2012, although Roberts dates its active development back to 2014. The single-player campaign features a massive cast including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Henry Cavill, and Andy Serkis.
The wider Star Citizen project recently surpassed $1 billion in crowdfunding while still in alpha. Squadron 42 appeared closer to the finish line after Cloud Imperium declared it “feature complete” in 2023 and announced a 2026 release window the following year.
In an August 27 Letter from the Chairman, Roberts revealed that Cloud Imperium had planned to release Squadron 42 during Q4 2026 around its annual Intergalactic Aerospace Expo.
However, Roberts said “there is no way” he would launch the game into the “attention buzz saw of GTA6.”
GTA 6 is currently scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Rockstar Games. A PC version has not been announced, meaning the two games would not be competing directly on the same platform.
Roberts nevertheless expects gaming outlets and content creators to focus heavily on GTA 6, leaving little space for another major release. Cloud Imperium has consequently selected Q2 2027, placing Squadron 42’s new window somewhere between April and June.
A small number of original Star Citizen backers and longtime content creators will still be allowed to play Squadron 42 on October 9 and 10. Cloud Imperium plans to provide more information during those sessions, then announce a specific release date shortly afterward.
