Within hours of the World of Warcraft: Forever beta launch on September 17, Blizzard's servers were buckling under a crowd far larger than the studio had planned for. For some of Blizzard's developers, the turnout was unlike anything they'd seen over years of running the MMO; given the product's quality, I don't think it's hard to see why. In fact, I think World of Warcraft: Forever might even be so impactful that it brings a harder, more immersive open world to retail's next expansion, The Last Titan—if game director Ion Hazzikostas is to be believed, that is.
Of course, the draw of that friction becomes even more obvious a few hours into the beta, since leveling is slow, getting anywhere takes real time, and every zone is packed with players who started at the same moment. I'm also not the player you'd expect to be falling for, having come to World of Warcraft through retail and missing the boat on Classic twice, first in 2004 and again in 2019. Even so, Forever has totally absorbed me for the past week, and the reasons why say a lot about what Blizzard seems to want here, and what it might have underestimated in retail.
For context, the first night of the WoW Forever beta went the way MMO launches often do: lengthy login queues gave way to disconnects just as players made it through, and server restarts arrived a few hours later. Blizzard's team later traced the trouble to several distinct issues, but the scale of the launch was the real star. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield's reaction on X read as if the developer was still catching his breath: "Beta has been... crazy. The craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard and almost 8 years on classic. We've got something really special here."
And it's hard not to agree with that final assessment, given how many people seemed involved in that launch stampede. Older players piled back in for a dose of nostalgia, sure, but Forever took off on Twitch and other streaming platforms too, and nostalgia only explains so much. Personally, I can also attest that several players like me, who never set foot in the original game, are falling in love with many of the same things for the first time.
My history with World of Warcraft starts with the very controversial Battle for Azeroth, runs through a Shadowlands pre-patch I played a lot of (as well as an actual Shadowlands launch that left me thoroughly whelmed), and ends with a quick return to The War Within. Through it all, though, I carried a certain envy for the players who got to experience Azeroth fresh, together, before anyone knew the fastest route to anything. Forever is the closest I've come to that feeling, which probably explains why I've already rolled an Undead Rogue and Undead Paladin, a Tauren Warrior, and a Troll Hunter in just a week—no Druid yet, but that will change with the new Druid form.
Much of that comes down to everyone starting at once, and with the beta's level cap initially set at 20, each server has been bunched onto a playing field just uneven enough to keep everyone in the mix. Part of the fun is the collective hunt for anything Forever does differently from Classic, and the Undead Paladin, a now extremely popular pairing the original game never allowed, is a good reminder that those differences can run deeper than a few new quests. The other part is a tremendous balance of sticking points.
And it's hard not to agree with that final assessment, given how many people seemed involved in that launch stampede.
Forever's slow leveling and even slower travel between zones leans far closer to Classic's grind than retail's convenience. But those frictions are the successful kind for two reasons: they give every level and every long walk a weight retail rarely bothers with, and an entire server is going through them with you. Blizzard has heavily pitched Forever around horizontal progression since the BlizzCon reveal, with the level cap staying at 60 as new zones, dungeons, and raids arrive—if the road to that cap looks anything like this, it's no wonder I keep making new characters to walk it again.
