Weapon and armor durability is an essential mechanic in The Witcher 3, which, if left ignored, will see you at a great disadvantage. Repairing your weapons and armor should be a priority, and we'll explain why below. We'll also explain how you can repair your weapons and armor in The Witcher 3 without having to visit an Armorer or Blacksmith every time you see that annoying red piece of gear on your HUD.
In The Witcher 3: Remastered, you can turn off item durability in the accessibility settings, and it won't impact achievements!
You can repair weapons and armor with Repair Kits, which are purchased from Blacksmiths (anvil icon on the map) and Armorers (armor icon on the map). You can speak with these NPC vendors, found across the many towns and villages of the open world, open their wares, and enter the Repair screen with R1/RB to purchase durability repairs.
You can also craft Repair Kits when you have their blueprints, and you should stock up on as many of these as you can craft and carry, as it allows you to repair gear while exploring and engaging in combat without making a detour to a Blacksmith or Armorer:
You should be able to purchase these Diagrams from these Repair Kits from Armorers and Blacksmiths!
To use them, enter the "Crafting" menu under "Glossary" and select "Tools".
Yes, you should always repair your weapons and armor when you see that their durability is low, or if you see one of your swords or armor is highlighted red on the HUD. When the durability gets too low, the damage of your swords decreases, and the defense of your armor weakens, making you more vulnerable in fights.
