Clear River Games has been doing God's work lately. Not only did they announce that Terranigma will be coming to modern platforms in 2027, but they also recently revealed that Lufia I & II will get a port as well. These are humble ports without many flashy additions, but they are more than enough to let us enjoy these rare JRPG gems on current devices without resorting to sketchy workarounds.
With that in mind, why not compile a list of other JRPGs that also deserve a modern port? I am not asking for quality-of-life overhauls, revamped graphics, or added trophy support (though I would love trophies, and Clear River Games releases will likely feature them), but for a way to play some console-locked JRPGs today without hassle while introducing them to a new audience.
These titles, for one reason or another, remain either trapped on legacy hardware or never received a global release, as was the case with Terranigma. I also invite you to share in the comments which other JRPGs you would love to see modernized in a brand-new port.
Square Enix has been on quite a mission to revive its legacy IPs for some time now. After giving an HD-2D treatment to Live A Live, a title that had never left Japan, I put nothing past them. Now we have Lufia I & II returning via Taito, and for those unaware, Square Enix is Taito's parent company, which indicates that Mama Square likely gave her blessing at some point.
So why not bring more region-locked JRPGs to modern audiences? It is a total crime that Bahamut Lagoon never received an international release. I played it back in the day with a fan translation patch, and even though some item descriptions made little sense, completely botching the food I fed to my dragons, I still had a blast. It is no surprise the title was almost called Final Fantasy Tactics before a proper tactical game in the crystal franchise actually materialized.
Still on the subject of Square JRPGs trapped in Japan, if one truly deserved broader recognition, it is Treasure of the Rudras. This is an insane game that inexplicably never hit overseas markets. I played it this year, and it is a rare gem for the genre. In it, you choose three main characters and can alternate between their storylines, with actions in one route actively reflecting in another, a concept that was completely unprecedented for its era.
