Blue N.O.V.A. Introduces its Own (Literal) Halo to the PvE Shooter Genre | IGN Preview

Built around a potentially brilliant mechanic that feels tailor-made for a PvE shooter, Blue N.O.V.A. has a ton of potential. But I left my hands-on demo and interview session with a few questions. Leaning into casual PvE shooting mechanics and a procedurally generated map gives it mass appeal and obvious replay potential. But I didn’t see some of what GungHo seemed, well, most gung ho about; namely, their investment in this game’s characters.

Set in a far-flung future where a rogue AI threatens what remains of humanity, thus propelling the people to new worlds, you're tasked with fighting the program and hopefully taking back a planet on the way. Not the most original setup, but at least it's topical!

That premise is meant to set up an iconic cast, which the developers seem really excited about. Beyond the high-profile Japanese voice actors they promise to recruit, the Tokyo-based publisher has also invested heavily in creating V-Tubers from the cast of Blue N.O.V.A. and even runs their social media channels in character. It's a lot for a game that doesn't seem close to coming out (it’s currently listed for 2027 without a precise date or window). From the inside looking out, it's hard to gauge these things against the chunk of game I played, because aside from a few 3D models, there wasn't much there. These public personas were not represented in the slice I played.

Still, it's really early in development. Chances are, you won’t see it in the state I did; that’s not to dunk on it, but I missed out on a lot of the stuff that’s meant to bring these characters to life. I don’t generally judge a game like this on its voice acting above, say, its shooting mechanics, but I could feel its absence. Given the chance to charm or repel, I'd have more to say about these characters. Even from this far out, it’s difficult to overstate how invested GungHo is in bringing them to life.

Instead, my favorite thing about this demo is probably the most unique thing about this game. I don’t mean to blow smoke, but the Ring system is perfectly tuned to a co-op shooter, especially one that leans towards the casual audience. Any time you’re close enough to at least one other player (or as many as six), a visual ring will automatically form, centered on the highest-performing player among the group. That ring nets group bonuses, including unlimited ammo, which comes in handy for weapons with longer reload times, for example.

That AOE felt generous enough to accommodate six people, but not so forgiving that you’d get roped in from yards away. In other words, just right. I’ll admit I had some trouble keeping up with the group of developers helping me through my demo as I found my sea legs with Blue N.O.V.A.’s movement and stamina bar, but I figured it out eventually.

Taking advantage of that halo made fighting big bad bots a breeze, and removing the need to reload doubles down on the casual, spray-n-pray, easygoing pace of play. That’s rare for a shooter, though not necessarily my vibe. I chase the flow state killstreaks and white-knuckle shootouts in the middle of a battle royale storm. It’s why I play multiplayer shooters, so this was new for me.

The pace and structure, on the other hand, wasn’t new. From dropping onto an island to looting my downed enemies to meeting up with squadmates, this flow is as straightforward and approachable as it gets. Markers on your HUD help guide you where you want to go, which then naturally guides you into other players. This kind of flips the premise of a battle royale on its head, though the goal remains the same: find other players.
