In tactical warfare, communication is crucial for winning as a team. A single class cannot do much in Wardogs, but when all classes gather around and use their special abilities, the synergy between them can lead to great success. That's why joining a squad in Wardogs is strongly recommended, though the game doesn't force you to do it.
When you play as a squad, you get a new voice channel that is dedicated to the squadmates. Also, everything that you ping on the map will be visible to all squadmates, and that makes spotting enemy locations a lot easier, especially if there is a sniper on the team who can locate the enemy position from a long range.
After you choose your faction, open the pause menu, and you will see the list of squads on the right side of your screen. If you don't see any, make sure to click on the human icons at the top of the sidebar.
Any squad with a Join button is open to be joined. Locked squads won't let you join. These squads are probably friends who only want to play together. They only unlock the squad when a friend wants to join, and then lock it afterward.
A third squad type is also available where you can request to join. Your request will be delivered to the leader, and if they agree, you will get access to join the squad.
You can also create your own squad by choosing the Create button at the top of the list. The player who creates a squad becomes the squad leader and has all the privileges to change the squad's settings. If you want to lock the squad, there is a small lock icon at the top right of the squad selection screen. You can also make a request-to-join by toggling the mail button below the lock icon.
If your squad is locked or people need to request to join, there is an option that allows you to send an invitation to other players. This is useful when you only want your friends to join a squad. To invite players, scroll down the squads list and open the Unassigned Players section. Here, you can find your friends and hit the plus icon next to their names to invite them to your squad.
Your squadmates will be marked by yellow icons on the screen. Remember that the pinging system only works for squads, and if you don't join one, no one will see your pings. Also, you won't gain any XP for pinging enemies using observation tools like Monoculars, Binoculars, or Range Finder.
