Konami announced a surprise remake of Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force 3 during the latest Nintendo Direct, bringing the PSP classic to Switch and PC after 18 years. But why 3? Logically, you'd expect to start with the first game and remake each game in order, or better yet, bundle them together like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.
As it turns out, Konami considered doing just that. "I did consider combining 1, 2, and 3, but that would have made the project too massive," game director Yuji Matsumura said in an interview with Dengeki Online (translated by DeepL). "So, if we were going to release a single title under the GX banner, I decided to remake 3."
For the unaware, Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force is an RPG with tag-team duels based on the GX anime, placing you in the shoes of a Duel Academy student. You can collect cards, construct decks, build relationships with characters from the show, and most importantly, battle them. So, remaking an entire trilogy would mean combining three RPGs' worth of content into one game—instead, Konami chose to remake 3, with the stories from the first two preserved in the gallery.
"During development, we received a lot of feedback saying, 'We really want to see the stories from 1 and 2, too," Matsumura said in an interview with Famitsu. "However, including everything as-is would inevitably make the game too large, so we implemented the gallery feature."
As for why Matsumura chose 3 as the foundation specifically, he explained that it is the "culmination" of the series, making it the natural choice for a "single title under the GX banner."
Combining three RPGs into one remake might have been "too massive," as Matsumura put it, but Tag Force GX is nonetheless an incredibly ambitious undertaking. Not only is the game getting a new coat of paint with reworked summoning scenes, 3D models, and full voice acting, but it also features more than 3,800 cards, online multiplayer, "new and renewed" minigames, and a casual difficulty for newcomers.
Though it's worth noting that the remake has come under fire for using generative AI to "help improve translation efficiency."
Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force GX launches on February 16, 2027, joining an already incredibly stacked month.
