Nintendo has officially announced Metroid Ravenous for Switch 2, Samus Aran’s first side-scrolling adventure since 2021’s acclaimed Metroid Dread.
The new Metroid game was unveiled during Nintendo’s September 9 Direct, with a release date to boot. Ravenous continues Nintendo’s trend of dividing the character’s time between her side-scrolling roots and the action-adventure-oriented Prime offshoot, which received its long-awaited fourth entry in 2025.
Ravenous’ first-look trailer shows off what appears to be a brand-new Metroid suit for Samus, which she seemingly acquires after suffering a rather nasty impalement injury.

While Ravenous had not previously been announced by Nintendo, its existence wasn’t a complete surprise.
The game’s title surfaced in July after a registration for Metroid Ravenous was spotted in Brazil. The listing was subsequently removed, leaving its nature unclear until Nintendo’s official reveal.
While story and new gameplay mechanics remain slim, Nintendo did reveal a new amiibo featuring Samus in her insect-like Metroid suit, and a special edition of the game that includes the typical SteelBook treatment.
Fans can undoubtedly expect more details closer to launch, which, as luck would have it, we already know isn’t too far away.
