Xbox's latest round of bad news has finally struck, as the company has officially announced its next round of layoffs following this summer's brutal reset that saw 1,600 people lose their jobs. As part of the ongoing reset, Xbox has now detailed certain shifts within the company, starting with the complete gutting of Halo Studios.
Despite having released a semi-successful remake of the original game earlier this year, Halo Studios has been hit hard with layoffs, and has essentially had the Halo name taken from it. Now confirmed by Xbox after initial rumors started circulating, Activision has taken the Halo brand and the studio will officially develop the next Halo game.
This news was announced by Xbox CCO Matt Booty in a recent Xbox blog post. In the post, Booty explains that the next, Activision-led Halo game will be developed by a "new, purpose-built team" that has been created and is separate from the development of the next Call of Duty game. Essentially, Booty claims that Activision's commandeering of Halo won't affect its Call of Duty release schedule.
You may now be thinking what happens to Halo Studios, given that the game its whole studio is named after doesn't actually get to make games in that series anymore? Well, that's a little bit less concrete, as Booty says that the studio is now responsible for "supporting the Halo community and games in-market." Could not tell you what that means.
It's another brutal round of layoffs, made worse by the fact that Xbox has just finished giving Hideo Kojima a big bag of money for his big Bill Skarsgard-led action game he's making, which doesn't even have an engine yet. And worse still, there's more to come in the future too, so let's maybe remember they're coming this time instead of fawning over a one-man band.
