Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave gives players four different character storylines to work their way through to get the full storyline. While these cross over in places, each one can be played and appreciated on its own. As you play through Cai's storyline, you'll quickly encounter a bunch of thieves up to no good. While these are pretty easy to take care of, on your way to the capital city Dagsion, you'll encounter another bunch blocking the way. After defeating them, they'll run off into a fort to the side on the map, and you'll be given the choice to follow the thieves or carry on. If you're wondering whether to follow the thieves into the fort in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, I've figured out the best option.
The best option is to follow the thieves and take care of them. While there are no negative consequences for carrying on with your journey, going after the thieves means you get to experience what is essentially a 'starter' dungeon. It introduces the basics and gives you the chance to earn some easy EXP for your party.
As Cai, Peter, and Tialla are only children, they're not veteran fighters and are relatively low level. Throughout Cai's story, the trio will get a lot stronger, but to begin with, the more levels you can grind out, the better. Following the thieves and completing this basic dungeon should see you gain one or two levels with each character and you can just use Castor to take care of most enemies as he deals significantly more damage.
You can complete the dungeon even faster by just using the Auto Battle or Skip to Conclusion options in every fight that you come across. There aren't any negative repercussions for using these systems, and the dungeon battles can get quite repetitive.
While defeating the thieves won't really do much in terms of the grander story plot, completing the dungeon does result in a few cutscenes that reveal who was behind them trying to steal the necklace that Cai's mother left him. It's a nice way to learn more about the story and world, without falling down too much of a rabbit hole.
If you choose not to follow the thieves and carry on to Dagsion, nothing happens. You don't see the cutscenes, miss out on earning some easy EXP, and the thieves won't mount some sort of siege against Cai's village. Given it only takes 5-10 minutes to complete, it's well worth the excursion.
