In July this year, IGN was invited to Rockstar North to see GTA 6 being played for the very first time, with Head of Development and Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson on the controller. It was honestly one of the most exhilerating experiences of my life – seeing GTA 6 in action before anyone else! And, when the Netflix extended look dropped in August, I was finally able to share my thoughts on what I'd seen. My preview detailed everything I saw in the exclusive 30-minute demo, which included a new-look wanted system, a new way to steal cars, and how Jason and Lucia's romantic relationship – although front-and-center in the demo and the Netflix video – is entirely optional.
I also spoke at length with Rob Nelson. He talked us through some of the big ideas in the game, the changes to some of the game mechanics we all know and love, and the 13-year development process that has gone into making Grand Theft Auto 6 the biggest, most immersive entry into the GTA series yet. The highlights of that conversation were published back in August too, but the entirety of that conversation has been sitting on my laptop... until now.
So why publish it, and why now? Although the coverage IGN ran back in August covers all the headline topics, the full interview captures what it was like to be in the room while GTA 6 was being played. It wasn't a prescribed demo and often things didn't work out as planned, and I found looking back over the full transcript of the interview really fascinating. And that's why I wanted to share the full interview with you, because I hope you find it fascinating too. As for the 'why now' of it all, why not now? It's GTA 6 and frankly I'm as excited for this game as anyone.
Since the interview took place while playing GTA 6, the conversation sometimes jumps around and often describes what’s happening on-screen, but I've done my best to fill in the gaps so you get a sense of what it was like. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved watching it!
IGN: Obviously there are the set pieces and the story missions in GTA 6, but it seems there's a lot more for Jason and Lucia to do in the world…
Rob Nelson: There is a ton of stuff the player can do in GTA 6, as Jason and Lucia on their own or together, in between missions and story-driven content.
IGN: I'm also fascinated to know more about the couple dynamics…
Rob Nelson: We can just run the game and start walking around, I think that's the most natural way to do it.
