Maybe this is just my inner literary nerd talking, but I love a good monologue. It’s an opportunity for a writer and, where applicable, an actor to really flex their chops and chew the scenery without hesitation. Maybe not all monologues end up perfect or memorable, but the ones that do? They stick with you, and they stick with you for a long time.
Being a primarily story-based genre, JRPGs are jam-packed with monologue moments, both from heroes, villains, and every other type of character in-between. They often arise at pivotal story beats, really helping to solidify whatever it is that’s currently in their hearts. A hero can speak on their convictions and morals, a vigilante on what drives them to move against the law, or a villain on what caused their fall from grace. These are the moments that often get clipped separately from the rest of the game and put on YouTube, because people just like watching them that much.
We’re using a bit of a loose definition of “monologue” here, permitting a few interjections from onlookers and opposition here and there so long as the crux of the moment belongs to one character.

In Tales of Vesperia, our main protagonist, Yuri Lowell, was born and raised in the lower quarter of the royal capital, which means he’s spent pretty much his entire life getting stepped on by greedy nobles and corrupt military personnel. For the most part, he was content to just be a thorn in their side, but in the events of the game, he starts taking on more darkly proactive actions, murdering several corrupt officials in cold blood.
When his friend, imperial knight Flynn, catches up to him and chastises him for engaging in vigilantism, Yuri immediately throws his accusations back at him.
