The last few years have seen a major boom in television and film based on video games. Not all of it has been perfect (lookin’ at you, Borderlands), but compared to the utter abominations of video game movies we put up with a few decades ago, it’s a far sight better, especially with popular franchises like Sonic raking in box office bucks. Given the positive trend, there’s definitely some more gold to be found in them there hills, and it looks like Sega’s willing to split its claim with Netflix.

According to a new report out of The Hollywood Reporter, Sega has just inked a fresh deal with Netflix to produce new treatments of several of its franchises. The highlight of this multi-picture deal, surprisingly, is a live-action film adaptation of Crazy Taxi, likely to coincide with the series’ revival via Crazy Taxi: World Tour when it releases some time next year. On top of that, we’ve got another Sonic the Hedgehog animated series in the pipeline, and a real curveball, a live-action movie based on Sega’s upcoming spin-off of the Like a Dragon/Yakuza franchise, Stranger than Heaven, which is also slated to release in January 2027.

While details on these three projects are a bit spotty, The Hollywood Reporter’s report did offer some interesting details on the prospective Crazy Taxi film. Specifically, the film’s writers will be Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the same writers behind last year’s reboot of the Leslie Nielson cult-classic comedy, The Naked Gun. In their corner as producers will be Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film, as well as Sega head producer Toru Nakahara.

In addition to the Crazy Taxi film, the new Sonic animated series, which doesn’t currently have any specific subtitle, will be handled by Carlos Stevens. Nakahara is also handling producer duties there, as well as with the Stranger than Heaven live-action film.

“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up. With Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven, we get to work across three completely different eras of Sega’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences,” Netflix’s vice president of nonfiction and transmedia, Brandon Riegg, said in a statement.
