GTA 6 Is "Extremely Tough" To Show Off, Rockstar Says

Rockstar Games co-studio head Rob Nelson has explained why Grand Theft Auto 6 went for the Extended Look format instead of the expected gameplay trailer.

It’s a little wild to think that it’s already been a few weeks since we finally got our first look at GTA 6 gameplay through the lengthy Extended Look. That deep dive was already unique with the whole Netflix premiere, but it was also a very different approach for Rockstar and not what anyone expected.

Back when GTA 5 was about to launch, Rockstar revealed its gameplay with a more traditional narrated trailer that has become very nostalgic in the 13 years since it released. The studio then repeated that format with Red Dead Redemption 2, leading many to think the same was coming for GTA 6. That didn’t happen, and there’s a good reason for it.

As pointed out by Twitter user videotech, Kinda Funny’s Andy Cortez was one of the few people invited to preview GTA 6 and get the chance to talk to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson. In Kinda Funny’s video preview of the game, which was posted a few weeks ago but has just resurfaced, Cortez shared what Nelson said about why an Extended Look was chosen.

According to Cortez, Nelson explained that the studio didn’t want to do a “narrated thing” partly because it’s already been done before, but also because GTA 6 is an “extremely tough game to show off”. There are “so many cool things” in the gargantuan game that a narrated trailer just wouldn’t have done it all justice.

As much as that makes sense, I do hope they bring back Tish Hicks for some of the game’s future marketing. Just one trailer, come on.

To be fair, that does track with what was included in the Extended Look. Even at nearly 30 minutes long, it still felt like it was just scratching the surface and teasing what players will be able to experience in GTA 6. Trust me, I was trying to cover it live, and the sheer number of things that were shown off was ridiculous.

Of course, there’s also the fact that GTA 6 is the most-hyped game of all time, which justifies it having something as mainstream as a Netflix premiere. Even if some fans still aren’t happy with GTA 6’s marketing campaign so far, you can’t deny that.
