Final Fantasy Resonance is giving series fans a fun new entry to look forward to ahead of next year's highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. The story behind Final Fantasy Resonance is fascinating, because it's a reworked version of the now-defunct mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, but with a traditional turn-based and HD-2D makeover. It gives Brave Exvius a second life via console, but that still isn't the most exciting thing about Resonance.
One of the most intriguing Brave Exvius features that is returning in Resonance is the Vision system. It's an integral piece of Resonance's gameplay, and it also gives the game a perfect excuse to bring back some of the franchise's most beloved characters. Every Final Fantasy game has its own special band of heroes, but there are specific ones who have become major fan favorites. Many of these heroes haven't been seen in a long time, but Resonance's Visions will allow longtime fans to revisit a lot of great characters that have played important roles in the overall series.
Visions are an equipment mechanic that players can use to strengthen Resonance's protagonist, Rain, and the rest of the supporting party. The fun twist is that Visions are actually crystallized memories of past Final Fantasy characters, so players get to take on some of their abilities in combat. It's a pretty clever approach to fan service. There are plenty of ways to do fan service in a way that feels disingenuous, but Resonance's Visions turns fan service into a gameplay feature that is actually useful.
Frankly, Final Fantasy has been having a bit of a moment, especially when it comes to throwback releases. Of course, the biggest launch to be excited about is the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation release in April 2027. Before the final chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 remakes arrives, though, this year has had some solid appetizers with the shadow-dropped Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion and Final Fantasy X on Switch 2. Square Enix has offered a heavy dose of Final Fantasy excitement in the past few months, but what makes Resonance so intriguing is that it's a call back to the series' classic era with its combat and visuals.
Final Fantasy Resonance's list of Vision characters is already shaping up to be a great cast. These franchise favorites might not be playable in the way that some fans would like, but the Vision system at least offers a small dose of characters that have been missed for a long time. The return of characters like Final Fantasy 7's Sephiroth and Cloud could also be the perfect way to get pumped about Revelation coming out.
Not every Vision is a throwback character from classic Final Fantasy games. Some characters that are unlocked through Visions are original characters that are exclusive to Resonance's world and story.
Players can't use Visions however they like. Even though Resonance allowing players to summon other Final Fantasy protagonists to aid in battle via abilities and skills is a solid way to bring back old names, the system has built-in limits that keep characters from becoming overpowered. For example, players can only equip one Vision at a time. However, these can be mixed and matched however one likes, so it can make for some pretty cool combinations.
If Final Fantasy Resonance's gameplay sounds like something you're interested in, it's important to be prepared ahead of time. Finding Visions in Final Fantasy Resonance can be done through side quests and finding Sanctums of Light. It's not exactly as simple as it sounds, though. In order to unlock each Vision at the corresponding Sanctum of Light, players will be given a series of questions to answer. This is to test compatibility with a Vision character to try and build a bond with players.
