Ace Combat Live Action Series Premieres Today

There's a brand-new Ace Combat fighter on the way — Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches (or, more appropriately, takes off?) on October 2nd. To get fans primed for the return of this classic series, Bandai Namco (which announced this title over a year ago) has teamed with IGN for a live-action web series. The title? Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Hour Zero, and the first episode just dropped on IGN's YouTube channel.

Featuring Josh Halloway of Lost fame, the first episode sets the stage for the game's fictional yet still intense geopolitical conflict. According to the description, Halloway's character is a pilot with "nowhere to land," and is one of the few survivors of the opening conflicts between the Republic of Sotoa and the Federation of Central Usea. Those other survivors are a news anchor portrayed by Cobra Kai's Talyn Tomita, and a doctor portrayed by an actor pretty used to commanding the skies himself, Superman Returns' Brandon Routh.

The first episode, simply listed as "Act 1," introduces us to a squadron of fighters led by Halloway. After some Top Gun-inspired character development and fighter jet hijinks, we learn that following said hijinks (which led to the assumed death of one of the squadmates, the capital of Usea, Theve, has fallen to the enemy. This is clearly meant to lead into one of the stories told in Ace Combat 8's campaign mode.

Act 2 is scheduled to follow this Thursday, with Act 3 premiering the following Wednesday, September 23. The entire series wraps up with an epilogue dropping on September 29th. Each episode releases on its listed date at 6 am PT/9 am ET.

In an interview with IGN, Halloway revealed that getting behind the kind of cockpit his character does was an early dream for him. However, when it turned out that becoming a fighter pilot required him to be, in his words, "a fricking math genius," he decided to "settle" for acting instead. Of course, he's just as likely to live out those fighter jet fantasies in Ace Combat 8, as he told the publication that working on these segments had rekindled an interest in gaming overall for him.

September 29th is also the launch day for the game, provided it's the Deluxe Edition. Otherwise, players will have to wait until that Friday, October 2nd. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve will be available for the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X|S, and on PC via Steam. It's also possible we might hear more about DLC, and even a sequel, very soon.
